Which plans can you get at your Atlanta address?
Most metro Atlanta addresses can choose a fixed or variable plan. A few Bartow County ZIP codes just northwest of metro Atlanta are in AGL's Rome delivery group, not the Atlanta group, and True Natural Gas offers a variable plan only there. Enter your ZIP code to check. This checker and the sign-up form use the same service-area data.
Moving to Atlanta? How to start natural gas service
- Check your ZIP code with the checker above.
- Go to Start Here and choose New Service, or call 770-502-0226.
- Enter the service address and pick a start date around your move-in day. The earliest date is the next valid service day; AGL does not accept weekends, Mondays or holidays as service start dates.
- Choose a plan. The plans offered depend on your address.
- Enter your details, including your Social Security number, which AGL requires. It is also used for the credit check that sets any deposit.
- True Natural Gas sends your order to AGL. On a fixed plan, a Disclosure Statement with your term and price arrives by mail within seven business days after AGL confirms your enrollment, and you have three days after you receive it to rescind.
Most move-ins do not require you to be home if the gas meter is outside and accessible. AGL may need an appointment to reach the meter or do a safety inspection; True Natural Gas schedules through AGL and does not control appointment times. Most activations are completed within a few business days, depending on AGL appointment availability and the season.
Turn-on fees total $50 for an existing meter ($25 from AGL and $25 from True Natural Gas) or $75 for a new meter installation ($50 from AGL and $25 from True Natural Gas).
Renting? It depends on your lease. If your building has a master meter, the property management chooses the marketer for the whole building.
How Atlanta's delivery group works
AGL divides its system into delivery groups, also called pool groups. Metro Atlanta addresses are in the Atlanta group, the largest in AGL's system. AGL's residential delivery-group listing places about 1.15 million residential premises in the Atlanta group, across about 100 cities, led by Atlanta, Marietta, Decatur, Alpharetta, Stone Mountain, Cumming, Lawrenceville, Roswell, Norcross and Duluth.
AGL assigns the group by address, not by ZIP code, so a ZIP code on the edge of metro Atlanta can include addresses in more than one group. Your delivery group does not change True Natural Gas's posted rates or how AGL calculates your base charge.
Metro Atlanta counties True serves include Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, Gwinnett and Clayton, plus Cherokee, Forsyth, Douglas, Rockdale, Henry, Fayette, Paulding, Newton, Barrow and Walton. See the full service area map.
What the AGL base charge is, and why it is the same under every marketer
The AGL base charge is a regulated Atlanta Gas Light charge billed through your marketer. It covers delivering gas to your home, pipeline maintenance and meter reading. It is a 100% pass-through, so it is the same whichever marketer you choose.
The largest part is the DDDC factor. Each August AGL reviews every meter's peak winter demand and assigns a DDDC, which usually takes effect with September bills and is shown on your bill next to your AGL account number. A full base charge is billed for each month regardless of the number of days of service.
Qualifying low-income seniors can get a reduction in AGL base charges through an AGL application. See natural gas discounts for seniors.
How to compare natural gas marketers in Atlanta
Every certified marketer's gas travels through the same AGL pipes. As the Georgia Public Service Commission notes, marketers differ in three areas: price, customer service, and service terms and conditions.
When you compare, look at the per-therm rate, the plan term, the monthly customer service charge and any early termination fee. The Georgia Public Service Commission publishes a pricing index of certified marketers each month.
Frequently asked questions
- Who delivers natural gas in Atlanta?
- Atlanta Gas Light (AGL) delivers natural gas to every address in metro Atlanta and maintains the pipes and meters. Natural gas marketers, such as True Natural Gas, buy the gas and bill you for it.
- How much is natural gas in Atlanta right now?
- True Natural Gas posts its current per-therm prices in the rate table on this page and updates them monthly. They are the same posted rates True offers across its service area. Your bill also includes a monthly customer service charge, the AGL base charge, and state and local taxes.
- Is the AGL base charge different in Atlanta?
- No. AGL sets the base charge for each address, mainly from the DDDC factor it assigns to the meter each year, and the same method applies across its system. The charge is passed through unchanged, so it is the same whichever marketer you choose. See how AGL calculates the base charge.
- How soon can I get gas turned on at a new Atlanta home?
- When you sign up for new service, the earliest start date you can choose is the next valid service day. AGL does not accept weekends, Mondays or holidays as service start dates, so pick a date around your move-in day. Most activations are completed within a few business days, depending on AGL appointment availability and the season. You usually do not need to be home if the gas meter is outside and accessible, but AGL may need an appointment to reach the meter or do a safety inspection. Turn-on fees total $50 for an existing meter or $75 for a new meter installation.
- What do I need to sign up?
- Your Social Security number, which AGL requires (or a Federal Tax ID for a business), your name as printed on your Social Security card, your service address and mailing address, and your AGL account number if you have one.
- Will I have to pay a deposit?
- It depends on your credit. The deposit may be waived if your credit score meets True Natural Gas standards, or if you provide a letter from your current marketer stating that your account has been in good standing for 12 months.
- I already have gas in Atlanta. How do I switch?
- Sign up and choose Switch to True. True Natural Gas notifies AGL and your current marketer for you. A switch processed by the 19th of the month should take effect on the first day of the following month; one processed later takes effect on the first day of the month after that. One switch a year has no AGL charge, and True waives the AGL fee for additional switches.
- Can every Atlanta address get a fixed rate?
- Most metro Atlanta addresses can choose a fixed or variable plan. A few Bartow County ZIP codes just northwest of metro Atlanta are in AGL's Rome delivery group, not the Atlanta group, and True Natural Gas offers a variable plan only there. Use the ZIP code checker on this page to see what is available at yours.
- Is there a fee to leave a fixed-rate plan early?
- Customers on a fixed or special rate plan may be charged a $150 early termination fee for switching natural gas providers before the contract expires. Check your contract for full details.
- Do you serve businesses in Atlanta?
- Yes. True Natural Gas offers commercial natural gas plans for businesses in metro Atlanta. See commercial natural gas rates.
